OC Register: Building Hope

by Michael Goulding

Sixteen veterans and their families soon will move into brand-new homes born inside a former blimp hangar.

About 300 volunteers with Home Depot – most of them from the store’s headquarters in Atlanta – joined Habitat for Humanity at the Tustin Legacy on Wednesday to frame walls that will become eight separate duplexes for veterans.

“It feels like we’re lifting a whole house, not only a wall,” grunted Home Depot’s Bill O’Connor as he and fellow volunteers heave-hoed their finished products into the back of a truck.

Sharon Ellis, CEO for Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, said the hangar provides a spacious shelter for construction.

“This is our second year here, and we’d love to make it an annual event,” she said.
