TUSTIN, CA – The Tustin community is invited to help shape the future of Tustin Legacy — one of the City’s most significant and transformative development projects. The City will host a Local Reuse Authority (LRA) meeting and open house on Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 5-8 p.m. in the Assembly Room at FLIGHT in Tustin Legacy (1715 Flight Way). This event is an opportunity for community members to learn about the history of the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Tustin, hear the latest updates from the City and project partners, and engage directly in conversations about what’s next for Tustin Legacy. Help shape the future of Tustin Legacy
Over the past several months, hundreds of community members have taken part in outreach efforts by attending events, completing surveys and joining public meetings to share their perspectives and feedback. As planning continues, the City remains committed to transparency by providing regular updates and inviting public input throughout the process. The upcoming LRA meeting and open house build on these ongoing efforts, offering community members another valuable opportunity to stay informed and participate in shaping the future of Tustin Legacy.
“The past, present and future of Tustin Legacy is vital to our city’s identity and long-term vision. As we plan for what’s ahead, we remain dedicated to transparency and meaningful community engagement. I encourage residents to attend the upcoming City Council and LRA meeting and open house to learn more about the history of MCAS Tustin and the Navy Hangars, contribute to this dialogue and help shape the future of Tustin Legacy,” Mayor Austin Lumbard said.
What to expect at the LRA Meeting and Open House
At the upcoming LRA meeting and open house, attendees will:
- Learn about the history and significance of the MCAS Tustin base closure and the City’s role as the Local Reuse Authority.
- Hear the latest updates on the Navy Hangars and Tustin Legacy development
- Get an overview of current and future plans for the site, including opportunities and challenges ahead.
- Participate in an open house following the meeting, where project partners — including schools, colleges, nonprofits, developers, and service providers — will be available for one-on-one conversations and questions.
Ways to get involved
To continue the meaningful conversations and encourage broad community participation, the City will host a variety of outreach activities this summer and fall, including:
- Tours of the Tustin Legacy site – giving residents the chance to explore key opportunity areas firsthand, including tours of the Navy South Hangar.
- Surveys – available in-person and online to make it easy for everyone to share their thoughts.
- Fall workshop – opportunity to further engage in conversation with peers.
- Regular project updates – shared through social media, newsletters, signage and dedicated web resources.
Project background
- In 1994, Tustin City Council was designated as the Local Reuse Authority, overseeing future development of Tustin Legacy — encompassing the acreage from the Marine Corps Air Station Tustin that closed in 1999.
- Tustin Legacy spans approximately 1,600 acres, and the development already includes more than 4,200 homes, 95 acres of parks and major public amenities.
- Navy North Hangar Update: The site spans 85 acres of Navy-owned land that includes the North Hangar that was damaged by fire in 2023. The City is developing a Reuse Plan to help guide future decisions, including a possible land transfer from the Navy.
- Navy South Hangar Decision Ahead: Located on land leased from the Navy, the South Hangar sits at the heart of the Tustin Legacy urban core. The City is evaluating options for its future use, with health, safety, community benefit and long-term costs under consideration.
