The City of Tustin has been ranked No 1 in the state and 12th nationwide in Fortune’s 25 Best Places to Live for Families. In its study, Fortune analyzed nearly 2,000 cities and towns across the United States that best address the needs of multigenerational households.
Fortune’s analysis considered education quality, aging resources, general wellness factors, affordability, and livability issues such as crime rates, and diversity.
“We are honored to be recognized as one of the Best Places to Live for Families,” said Mayor Austin Lumbard. “Tustin is a place for all generations and every walk of life. We take pride in ensuring Tustin is a safe city with beautiful parks, diverse housing, great shopping, dining, a vital workforce and outstanding schools.”
A recent Fortune survey found that nearly half of Americans who are raising children under the age of 18 are also having to bear the responsibility of caring for aging family members. This group, commonly known as the “sandwich generation,” was the focus population used for the Fortune rankings. The cities which made the top 25, are most likely to have access to critical resources, community support, and financial wellbeing.

TUSTIN, CA – The Tustin community is invited to learn more about the progress made to date and what’s planned for the future of Tustin Legacy — one of the most significant development projects in the City’s history. With approximately 500 acres of land still available for development, Tustin Legacy is at an important juncture in its growth trajectory, offering community members the chance to be part of its future. The City will host an open-house-style public meeting on Tuesday, May 13, at 6 p.m., at The Annex at Tustin Legacy (15445 Lansdowne Road) to kick off a collaborative months-long engagement process.
“The future of Tustin Legacy is being re-written,” said Mayor Austin Lumbard. “We want this to be a collaborative process that reflects the values and vision of the people who call Tustin home. We encourage all residents and stakeholders to attend the meeting on May 13 to participate in this exciting initiative.”
Build the future together
The City has set a clear vision for Tustin Legacy. The project spans approximately 1,600 acres, transforming a former Marine Corps Air Station into a thriving mixed-use community over the last 30 years that already includes more than 4,200 homes, 95 acres of parks and major public amenities.
The next phase of development will build on this progress, but community input will be central to how the remaining 500 acres evolve. The upcoming outreach process effort will raise awareness and foster community engagement around the iconic Tustin Hangars. While the North Hangar was recently damaged by fire, the South Hangar remains intact. The City intends to engage the community in a discussion focused on:
Ways to get involved
To foster meaningful conversations and encourage broad community participation, the City will host a variety of outreach activities this spring and summer, including:
Stay connected
The City encourages residents to stay engaged throughout the process:
Tustin Legacy is more than just a development — it's an opportunity to help shape the future of our community. Additional details about upcoming workshops, surveys and engagement opportunities will be shared in the coming weeks. Community members are encouraged to participate and join us on May 13 to help guide the future of Tustin Legacy.

On Sunday, June 5, 2022, Tustin Mayor Austin Lumbard and City Council Members revealed the new City logo at the 38th Annual Tustin Street Fair & Chili Cook Off. The new brand was created following more than a year of research and conversations with city staff, Council, community partners and the community, about what Tustin means to them.
(l-r: Mayor Pro Tem Cooper, Council Member Clark, Mayor Lumbard, Council Member Gomez, City Manager Matthew West)
About the Logo
The City’s new brand is modern and exciting and visually represents Tustin’s rich heritage of agriculture and military history as well as the City’s unified, diverse and inspiring future. Following the brand launch, the City will begin updating its communications channels including the website, social media and replacing banners and signage in key locations throughout the community.
“As your Mayor, I’m very excited to share our new logo with Tustin residents. Each one of you are part of what makes this community special,” said Mayor Austin Lumbard. “We appreciate your input throughout the process and your sharing what Tustin means to you.
